Proteins are necessary for living
organisim due to organizing functioning of the body and defense system by
participating of hormones and enzymes. There are no consensus about high protein
diets. But there are various methods for calculating the percentage of protein
in diet.Firstly we need to measure the protein amount in diet. Each grams of
proteins give 4 kcal,so please multiply with 4.The total energy rate of the
energy provided by the protein should be calculated as percentage. The food industry
considers as high protein diet if daiy energy from proteins are 20% or more. However,
The Ministry Of Health recommends providing 10-15% of energy from
proteins,55-60% of energy from carbonhydrates, maximum 30% of energy from fats.
Different studies have been
conducted on the effect of the protein ratio in the diet on weight loss. Some studies suggest that increasing the
amount of protein may have a positive effect on the weight loss process in the
short term. This has been shown to be associated
with increased protein satiety, increased thermic activity of nutrients, and a
decrease in hunger, insulin release and daily energy uptake with high protein
diets. However, other studies have stated that satiety can change with energy
intensity, amount of food, and difference in taste sensation. They stated that the effect of high protein weight
loss could not be clearly determined before saturation conditions were
controlled. The weight loss effects of high protein diet in long term are not
clearly determined.
The impact and reliability of high-protein low-carbohydrate diets on
general health status are questioned. If daily carbonhydrate intake is below 50
gram/day,ketogenic effects might be seen in the patients and ketone bodies
might be formed. The increase in ketone bodies might be resulted with decrease
in blood PH values. With the
decrease in blood pH, health problems such as coma and shock can occur.
Some studies have associated weight loss observed in low-carbohydrate,
high-protein diets with a reduction in the amount of water in the body. They noted that long-term low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets
may lead to weight loss from the muscles. However, it is
recommended to lose weight from fat when doing diet.
The effects of high protein diets are really concerned. While applying high protein diets which protein sources you consumed is important.(animal protein or plant protein).Animal protein might cause increase in blood cholesterol level. Some studies stated that there are significant relation between high protein diets and cardiovascular mortality. In another studies no difference between high protein diets and high carbonhydrates are found.
Short and long term studies of high protein diets on kidney health are insufficient.
Studies on the follow-up of long-term high-protein low-carbohydrate diets are few. There was no statistically significant difference in terms of weight loss throughout these studies. In addition, the health effects of long-term administration of high-protein are not clearly known.
Reducing the amount of carbohydrates also reduces the amount of fiber taken in
the diet.
Taking an excessive amount of animal-derived proteins increases the level
of cholesterol and might increases the risk of heart disease.
It is suggested that high-protein low-carbohydrate diets may have a negative effect on bone mass.High protein intake can lead to an increase in the amount of amino acids and acidity. The body is thought to be able to take of calcium in the bones to balance this increase.
It is more important to give healthy eating behaviors to individuals than
to change the content of diets.
Individual diet-specific follow-up should be done in consultation with a
dietitian.
